Chapter Ten

Sharif paced outside the bedroom while Rose got Olivia settled in. The town of Bridle was not so far away. Why had the doctor not arrived yet? Sharif had offered him a handsome enough fee to come to the house. Although he did not understand why he had to do so. In his country, a royal summons was enough.

However, he would have offered much more to have Olivia cared for.

He could not remember ever feeling so panicked or helpless as he did when he saw her lying still on the ground. That in itself was unnerving. He had known her two days. A mere forty-eight hours, yet the turmoil she stirred inside him was startling.

The door opened, and Rose walked out and closed it behind her. She gave him a sympathetic smile. “She’s sore, but she’ll be fine. Although she’s not too happy with you.”

He waved a dismissive hand. “Good. Then she is not ailing too badly.”

Rose laughed softly. “She sure won’t be walking for a while, but the ice has helped keep the swelling down.”

“And her head?”

“The aspirin helped, but I’m glad you called the doctor. I’d be surprised if she didn’t have a slight concussion.”

Sharif pushed a hand through his hair and started to pace again.

“Go ahead,” Rose said, and when he looked at her, she winked. “Go in and talk to her.”

“Is it safe?”

Rose laughed. “Probably not.”

He nodded, and smiled. “Thank you.”

“I’m glad you came to me.”

Sharif said nothing, he merely nodded again. He was unsure why he had sought her out. He could have gone to Alex. That may have been simpler, since his brother knew he had gone after Olivia. But for some inexplicable reason, it had seemed so natural to go to Rose.

“I’ll bring the doctor up when he gets here. If either of you need anything, I’ll be in the den reading.” She headed for the stairs, her slim body wrapped in a too-big pink robe, and he watched her until she disappeared.

She was too thin, probably from so many years of captivity, yet she never complained. And still, she carried herself as regally and poised as any queen.

Unexpectedly, pride warmed him and, unwilling to analyze its source, he knocked on Olivia’s door, then opened it before she granted permission.

She looked small and pale in the queen-size bed, her face framed by two enormous pillows, the covers pulled up to her chin. She blinked as though coming out of a trance, then made a face. “I’m not seeing any stinking doctor, and I mean it. My foot and head are both fine. Ask Rose.”

He entered, unhurried, and sat in the chair beside the bed. “My mother agrees with me.”

“The heck she—” Olivia stared at him. “What did you say?”

Sharif’s chest tightened, making it difficult to breathe. The words had slipped out mindlessly. “The doctor should arrive at any moment. The sooner he examines you, the sooner we can all get some sleep.”

She looked at him in annoying silence, a thoughtful frown drawing her eyebrows together.
